An example of hail strike assessment.

Hailstorms are one of the most common causes of property damage in the Northeast. Hail stones can cause damage to windows, siding, roofs, landscaping, and crops. Even if the hail storm did not appear to be severe, you should still look over your property for any sign of damage. If you are unsure of what to look for, it is best to consult with a hail damage expert and have a professional inspect your property.

The experts at most insurance adjuster companies are trained in how to evaluate hail damage and record the full extent of your loss. Once the loss is documented, a public adjuster can handle the rest of the details of your hail damage claim, including meeting with your insurance company, submitting your claim, and handling the final settlement negotiations.

Having a professional on your side can help to alleviate the burden of dealing with your hail damage claim and will help you get the full settlement that you deserve.

Without visible damage there is no real way to be sure how much damage shingles have encountered. Outward damage may not appear until months or years later. In accordance with the terms of the Limited Warranty, there is no coverage for damage caused by hail. However, should the shingles be damaged by hail, there is continuing coverage for manufacturing defects. There is a definite distinction between a manufacturing defect and damage caused by hail.

How to Identify Roof Hail Damage

In the Capital District area, asphalt shingles are the primary roofing material used on roofs and are the vast majority of our hail damage repairs and replacement roofs. Below are some common signs your roof has been damaged by a hail storm but this is the quick over view:

Bruising on the roof’s asphalt shingle (dark spots often 1/2 to 1 1/2″ or greater in size)

Granules are missing from the shingle (roofing shingle has ‘bald spots’) Granule loss may just be the result of old age…like the bald spots I have. You will often see signs of granule loss spilling from the down spouts. This may well signify the need for a new roof.

Hail bruised shingles feel softer to the touch than the surrounding ones. This is one of the key things insurance adjusters are checking to determine hail damage.

Metal air vents (turtle cans, turbines, power vent covers, skylights, are dented, damaged or broken.
Hail damage to cars is a quick indicator of hail damage. It usually takes hail over 1 1/4 inch to damage a car. If if it damaged your car, then there is a good probability the hail damaged your roof as well.

 Other Collateral Damage:

• broken skylights

• broken windows

• broken siding

• broken shutters and trim

• tree or shrub damage
