When the news broke this past August that Augie’s Family-Style Restaurant & Bar had burned to the ground, I do not exaggerate to say that there were untold numbers of Capital Region diners that were just heartbroken. Augie’s has legitimately earned a special place with local diners by consistently serving very generous portions of outstanding Italian food at reasonable prices.


Augie, being a man of action, knew he could not disappoint his patrons or employees. So, unbelievably, he began his search for a new location the evening of the fire. When a realtor showed Augie 17 Low Street in Ballston Spa, Augie knew this was it. Without losing any time, Augie, along with his employees, and some wonderful friends who just happened to be contractors, did not miss a beat. They rolled up their sleeves and began the renovation of the new restaurant. A quick month and five days later, the new Augie’s opened to the public.


The new Augie’s has the same comfortable family friendly feel.  One difference I noticed right away, the bar area is now separate from the dining room. The red and white checkered table cloths are still adorning the tables, and the baseball and horseracing pictures are still strategically hung throughout the dining room. The earth tone walls and ceramic tile floor are very vogue, giving the restaurant a modern appeal. The dining room has many attractive touches. In fact, when I commented about how great it looks, I was told Augie even did the decorating…a man of many talents indeed!


I am thrilled to report that Augie’s signature menu has not changed. The portions are still served family style with plenty to go around.  My companion and I were so happy to be back at Augie’s and could not wait to dig into our delightful basket of dense peasant bread.  Augie’s always has so many tempting selections to choose from, it can be a bit challenging. But those of us who are regulars have our favorites. On the evening my companion and I were at Augie’s one of the salad specials sounded too good to pass up. Augie’s always has new and exciting menu selections. Our salad was a massive verdant delight consisting of piled high red and green spinach, roasted asparagus, roasted red and green peppers, fried prosciutto, caramelized onions, artichoke hearts, tomatoes, gorgonzola cheese, and drizzled in just the perfect vinaigrette. The salad was so brimming with fresh earthy tastes and textures, with the fried prosciutto giving it just the right crunch and salty appeal.


Even though there were so many tempting evening specials, my companion and I were both craving Augie’s veal cutlet parmigiana. The highest quality tender veal cutlets, fried to a delicate perfection, topped with Augie’s  bright fresh tomato sauce, that is so light and perfectly seasoned with fresh herbs, and crowned with creamy melted mozzarella cheese, it gets no better than this! We took our time to enjoy each delicious mouthful.


A night at Augie’s would not be complete without sampling one of his famous house-made desserts. On this particular evening, Augie’s legendary tiramisu was calling us and we in no way resisted the call. This heavenly concoction of ladyfingers, mascarpone cheese, espresso, and bittersweet chocolate, is truly mastered at Augie’s. It was in a word- sublime!


I am so happy to report that Augie’s Family-Style Italian Restaurant & Bar is back and never better. Whether you have that Augie’s favorite dish you cannot live without, or love tasting Augie’s ever changing specials, or need Augie’s to cater your next party, Augie’s is back!
